Health Systems 20/20 joined some 12,000 public health professionals from the US and around the world to participate in the 138th Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association. Under the theme of Social Justice: A Public Health Imperative, thousands gathered at the opening general session and left inspired for the week and work ahead.
In the opening session, Dr. Cornel West, American philosopher, author, critic, actor, and civil rights activist, and professor at Princeton University, extolled attendees as "representing America at its best" and heralded their "steadfast commitment to the well-being of others." Dr. Howard Ko, Assistant Secretary of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, referred to attendees as "professionals that make things happen" who work tirelessly to help others reach the "highest attainable standard of health."
The Abt presence was strong at the meeting with International Health presenting seven panel and poster presentations and the Domestic Health Division making eight presentations.
For the second year in a row, the Abt booth in the exhibit hall won a first place blue ribbon for best booth. Abt staff, including a strong contingency from human resources, spent four busy days meeting and greeting folks at the booth. At a reception for colleagues and clients, Abt offered an opportunity for conference attendees to mingle, meet new colleagues, and catch up with old friends.
It was an exciting five days of attending scientific sessions, visiting the hundreds of organizational booths in the exhibit hall, and attending APHA section meetings and socials. Denver welcomed attendees with sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s and sent participants off with snow and sleet. Attendees left energized and ready for next year's meeting in Washington, DC, to take place October 29 - November 2, with the theme, Healthy Communities Promote Healthy Minds and Bodies.
